Bushfire Appeal Video Message from Bishop Anthony

A message from the Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP, on the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta Bushfire Appeal

Over the past week, bushfires have devastated parts of New South Wales and the Government has declared a state of emergency. The number of houses lost or damaged is now in the hundreds and fires keep blazing.

We have seen harrowing reports of whole streets destroyed and people standing in smoking ruins, grieving the loss of their homes and precious memories.

The Blue Mountains region in the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta is one of the areas that has been hardest hit. We have lost church property and our schools in Springwood have been repeatedly threatened. More tragically, several church workers have lost their homes.

I have been especially grateful to our school leaders, staff and communities for all they have done to keep our children safe. I am very proud of them.

The Diocese has launched an emergency appeal to assist those affected by the fires. It is being co-ordinated by CatholicCare Social Services Parramatta. Donations received will be used to provide much-needed material support and counselling to those in our region affected by the fires.

Times of great difficulty are often also times of great solidarity, expressed by an outpouring of generosity across the community.

We are all indebted to the firefighters, police and volunteers for their courageous efforts in protecting human life and property.

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has expressed his concern and prayerful solidarity with us at this time. He is praying with us that the fires soon abate. I assure you of my prayers for the victims and their loved ones, for those fighting the fires and caring for the victims, and for all the affected communities.

Donations to the emergency appeal can be made through CatholicCare Parramatta’s website: People directly affected by the fires should contact CatholicCare Parramatta on (02) 9933 0233 for support.
