On Sunday 2 March, Caritas Australia launches Project Compassion 2014 – one of Australia’s largest humanitarian fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns.

Project Compassion is the annual appeal by Caritas, the Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency.

This year’s theme is from the Apostle John (10:10): “have life and have it to the full”. Caritas will use Project Compassion to celebrate our shared desire to live a full life, free from the burden of poverty; enriched by fair and equal access to food and water, healthcare, shelter, education and justice.

Caritas is asking Australians to help make this vision a reality for all people, especially those whose lives are threatened by poverty, conflict and injustice.

The CEO of Caritas Australia, Paul O’Callaghan, said Australians have traditionally been supportive of this annual appeal because they see how Caritas works to achieve impact in 35 countries.

“The wonderful generosity of the Australian community has enabled Caritas to work alongside communities over the long term in Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Latin America and with First Australian communities,” he said.

This has helped to transform the lives of many marginalised people.  Every dollar raised and every individual, school, parish or community that embraces Project Compassion makes a real difference.

“Since starting at Caritas Australia in December 2013, I have been impressed by the ongoing commitment of Caritas supporters to walk in solidarity with the poor and oppressed in other lands.

“As Caritas celebrates 50 years of working alongside poor communities, we will use this year’s appeal to further contribute to a full life for all.”

During Lent, Australians are invited to raise funds for Project Compassion in a variety of ways. This can be by direct donation, raising money through a range of activities, e.g. events such as running, swimming or walking for Caritas Ks or hosting a Fish Friday event where people eat small fish meals in exchange for their donations to Caritas Australia.
